Interview with Davey
Conducted By Brett Tidbitz
This interview was done through mail

Brett: TidbitzWhen did you start?

Davey Havok: Summer of 91

Brett: How did you meet?

DH: We all went to high school together

BT: Who are your influences?

DH: Minor Threat, Misfits, Black Flag, Descendents, and many more

BT: How many tours have you had?

DH: About 6 so far and many more to follow

BT: What have been your worst and best show experiences?

DH: The best was when this guy Aaron did a double flip off a P.A. stack at the Very Proud Of Ya record release. Worst- anytime I've almost gotten killed at a show especially Toronto 96' and Oakland 93'

BT: What style of music do you consider yourselves, i have heard you called east bay hardcore but i have also heard people say that you are mostly punk rock?

DH: We play melodic hardcore. We play a type of hardcore that is remenissed of a few older DC,LA, and NY hardcore bands that is more melodic than metallic. Some of our songs are purely punk and have nothing to do with hardcore as well as the inverse being true. But most of the stuff we do is simply melodic hardcore its melodic and hard what can i say?

BT: What do you think is the difference between punk and hardcore is?

DH: I just asked my friend Timmy (Armstrong of Rancid) the same question the other day. he responded "attittude". Which is often true. HC bassically focuses on emotions whether they be joy, despair, anger, frustration, and social interaction whereas punk is often political, noncensical,or nihilistic. As far as the music goes there are areas of gray when Deadguy and Quicksand are both hardcore bands and Greenday and The Criminals are both punk bands its too dificult to pinpoint either genre let alone make a useful distinction between. but for starters hardcore is generally more agressive.

BT: Do you ever plan to sign to a major what do you think of bands who have?

DH: We dont plan on signing to a major we plan on staying on nitro. However i believe i speak for all of us when saying we dont care whether a band is on a major or an indie. If they play good music we'll listen if not, we wont, simple really.

BT: It seems in the past year you have jumped pretty quickly in sucess is that true?

DH:Gosh, I dont know. yes, in the past year our followings have grown a bit (some places more than others) I wouldnt go so far as to say we've jumped into success. Many many people have never heard of AFI.

BT: Do you have a preference over either of your full lengths or 7 inches?

DH: Personally I prefer the new LP (Very..) to the old one both lyrically and musically. Its harder and less silly. I believe Fly.... is our best 7 inch.

BT: Did you all grow up in the East Bay?

DH: Nope, we are transplants, we all did most of our growing up in (northern) CA.

BT: Why did you switch labels from Wingnut to Nitro?

DH:Wingnut does not do its job as a label and has some questionable business practices. Nitro is honest and well run.

BT: Any last words?

DH:Thank you, anyone can write to us at PO Box 4522, Berkeley CA 94704
